The Toolbar
Take control of your Contalto experience via the toolbar
The Contalto Toolbar appears across the top of content feeds and dashboards, and serves two main purposes:
1) As a visual reminder of the currently active analysis parameters
2) Giving you the means to customise feeds and dashboards according to your needs, as well as to download them, and to manage your notifications
Introducing the Toolbar

Clicking on any of the buttons on the toolbar, or typing in the search field, will reveal a range of options. Learn more by checking the tabs below…
Using Search
The Toolbar's Search function can be used in two ways:
1) Search the Contalto application to find specific brands, publishers, sectors, themes and other available filters and variables.
2) Search within the text content of the branded content articles and campaigns themselves, to find only the items containing your specific keywords.
By default, search is conducted in the app. As per the image below, as soon as you start typing your search term, the filter tab will open, and ‘matches’ start to appear in the filter list.
You can choose from these search results, or refine your search term. Alternatively, hit the ‘Search in Content’ button to bypass the filters and search the content itself.
Search in Content
Search the text of branded content articles to quickly find content containing precise or topical terms that are not available via Contalto's existing filters.
Simply type your search keyword(s) or phrase, then click the blue 'Search in Content' button.
You can then choose to search in the...
Title (article title or campaign name)
Content (the body of the article)
Content and title (actually content OR title)
Once you have made your selection, the currently displayed feed or dashboard will automatically reload to display your search results.
You can search for…
- Single keywords, e.g. sustainable
- Multiple keywords (or), e.g. sustainable OR sustainablility OR sustainably
- Multiple keywords (and), e.g. Paris AND Olympics
- Phrases, e.g. “sustainable development goals”
- Phrases + keywords, e.g. “sustainable development goals” OR SDG
Search in content is not case sensitive.
Search in context
If you are already viewing a filtered feed or dashboard, searching-in-content will apply to the current feed or dashboard.
If you want to see all content for specific brands or brand groups, always use the appropriate filter and NOT 'search-in-content'. This is because the brand name does not always appear in the text content of articles, but Contalto always tags articles with the sponsoring brand name.
Filters & Filtering
Contalto's extensive library of filters makes it easy to zoom in on the content that is most relevant to you.
Key points to know about filters…
- Filters can be used individually or combined
- They apply in real time to the currently displayed feed or dashboard
- Frequently used filter combinations can be saved for future use
- Filtered results can be saved as a new feed, or as a custom dashboard
As per the image below, you can choose from 5 MAIN filter types and 7 ANALYTICS filter types.

Analysis Period
The Analysis Period works independently of other toolbar settings, and can be adjusted at any time.
The default analysis period is P12M (past 12 months).
To change the analysis period…
- Click the button on the toolbar to open the calendar
- Choose one of the preset date ranges
- Or set a custom start and end date via the year/month/day options in the calendar
If needed, click the ‘Save custom range’ button below the calendar to name and save your preferred date ranges for future use.
More Analysis Periods
To view preset date ranges for each year back to 2019, click the ‘Show More’ button at the bottom of the calendar. You can then select a year to reveal the available preset ranges.
Platform Selection
The Platform selection determines the base data for the displayed feed or dashboard.
Simply click the button in the toolbar to change platform.
Current options are…
- All Content (default setting)
- Web Articles (publisher-hosted web articles and videos, excluding social posts)
- Any Social (paid posts from any of the covered social platforms)
- Facebook (paid posts)
- Instagram (paid posts)
- LinkedIn (paid posts)
Publisher Coverage
By ‘Coverage’ we mean the geographical area that the publisher primarily targets, i.e. where its main audience is located.
Users may select a single coverage area, or any combination of 2+ areas.
‘All Coverage’ is the default setting. For most subscribers, this will include English language publishers only; hence France will be excluded, and will not appear in the list of coverage options.
International means that the publisher is more global, and caters to readers/viewers in multiple regions.
Asia Pacific coverage is currently limited to a selection of English language publishers in Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Download the full list of publishers by coverage.
Display Settings
Contalto offers a number of options to fine-tune the display of content feeds.
GRID
The content feed consists of image tiles arranged in a grid and ordered from newest to oldest.
Depending on your choice between Items and Campaigns, each tile represents either a single item of web content or a social post, or a campaign consisting of multiple items.
LIST
List view allows for quicker scrolling, and also lets you choose which columns to display, and in what order.
Note: Column selection is not retained in Excel downloads (all columns are included by default).
Manage Notifications
Notifications let you automatically share Contalto's content and events intelligence with anyone in your team or wider organisation, regardless of whether or not they have a Contalto login.
There are two types of notification:
- Email Alerts
- Scheduled Downloads
Notifications and email lists (recipients of alerts or downloads) can be managed from the toolbar at the top of the screen.
View the dedicated guide to notifications here
Downloads
Downloads are available throughout the Contalto application.
Simply click the download icon at the end of the toolbar, and select your preferred format.
Please allow a few seconds, or even up to a minute for larger downloads to initialise.
